                                       Learning Disabilities

I first became involved in learning and behavioural difficulties through some joint arts/drama work at a local hospital in the late 1980's. Since then I ran Drama Space a weekly workshop for learning disabled clients in Birmingham for two years. I then went on to run drama classes for learning disabled clients in Dudley and Walsall.

In 1995 I was asked to help set up 'Open Stage' a weekly drama group for adult clients  with learning disabilities with volunteers from the community. The group has been running successfully since then in Wordsley near Stourbridge in the West Midlands. I gave up running the group in 2004 but the group continues on a weekly basis wit over 30 members relatives carers and volunteers who turn up each week.

Open Stage Member having fun!

Junior Open Stage- Orchard Partnership

I was also fortunate to be asked to help set up a junior version of Open Stage (8-16) in February 2002 lead by The Orchard Partnership, a local charity set up to work with children with disabilities and emotional and behavioural problems. Orchard have now received a £1 million lotteries grant and have set up their own centre and run the project in conjunction with Kids a national children's charity.

'Devalued children and adults have, with a few shining historical exceptions, received the worst schools, the worst teachers, the worst medicine, the worst hospitals and homes and little pioneering treatment.'
